Genesis Robotic Thru-Transmission Ultrasonic Inspection
Dependable Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Inspection
Using pairs of conventional ultrasonic probes, thru-transmission ultrasound (TTU) is a well-established non-destructive inspection technique that is especially useful for testing parts for defects and inconsistencies when single-sided pulse echo (PE) processes fall short. Where PE inspection uses one device both to send and receive sound waves through the material for testing, the thru-transmission method uses two devices: one to send the sound waves and another to receive them from the opposite surface.
Thru-transmission offers a few specific advantages for inspection compared to pulse echo and other ultrasonic testing methods, namely, the results aren’t impacted by the tested object and potential defects’ spatial position. It is especially applicable for multi-layer materials such as those with honeycomb or foam core.
Genesis has integrated both air-coupled and water-coupled TTU process packages into NSpect systems for production applications.

- The Genesis NSpect™ 110 Robotic NDI System, contains a KUKA 6-axix stationary robot which manipulates a carbon fiber 60-inch throat depth yoke with coaxial transducers capable of scanning a part surface with Through Transmission Ultrasound and Pulse Echo.
This system is designed to process parts in a “process-to-part” operation. The robot manipulates the end of arm tool along the geometry of the part, in a raster scan pattern allowing the tool mounted Transducers to collect wave form data.
During the scan, pulse-on-position trigger signals are passed to the ultrasonic inspection instrument and the data acquisition system such that the inspection results can be plotted in a C-Scan format for analysis.
This system can operate in Pulse Echo and Through Transmission Ultrasound dual frequency coaxial transmission at 1 & 5 Megahertz. This enables simultaneous Through Transmission Ultrasound and Pulse Echo on both sides of the part
Genesis has integrated the AUSS motion mapping, data collection system and visual analysis tools into the NSpect family of systems.
Genesis’ VectorTM software is used in conjunction with AUSS’ to simplify path planning for inspections. Parts can be programmed either offline using 3D CAD models or manually on the parts. The motion paths can be simulated and edited in the Vector environment to both optimize the process and to avoid collisions. Once a program is confirmed to be acceptable, it is seamlessly transferred within the AUSS Robot operator interface to the robot.

- The Genesis NSpect™ 115 Robotic NDI System, contains a single, track-mounted KUKA 6-axis robot.
This system includes various inspection process packages, including multiple Phased Array Ultrasound tools and a pair of Through Transmission Ultrasound yokes . All tools are interchangeable with Automatic Tool Changers
This NSpect system will inspect multiple composite parts using a water-coupled Through Transmission Ultrasound technology. It is also capable of performing single-sided Pulse Echo and Phased Array inspections, with the included process equipment and end of arm tools.
For the ultrasonic process equipment, Genesis has selected Boeing’s AUSS instrumentation and software package. Building on 25+ years of automated inspection experience, Genesis has integrated the AUSS programming, data system and analysis into the NSpect family of systems. Included is a digital data system, with a high power Through Transmission Ultrasound instrumentation with dual frequency transducers. It is capable of operating in Through Transmission Ultrasound at either 1 & 5 MHz or 2.5 & 5 MHz while providing simultaneous Pulse Echo on both sides of the part. The Phased Array subsystem is based upon the Olympus Focus PX package. Data analysis will be achieved with Boeing’s ImagIn software which is tightly coupled with the Motion Mapping Package.
Each process tool also includes an ATI Automatic Tool Changer that mates with the robot Master tools, allowing the robot to change between tools in an automated fashion.
